What counts as visited?
There is no fixed rule. Many travelers count a country once they have stayed overnight or at least seen something there. A connecting flight at the airport does not count for most people. Pick your own rule and stick to it, then your number stays honest.
How many countries are there?
The United Nations has 193 member states. Add the 2 observer states, Vatican City and Palestine, and you get 195. This map shows 242 countries and territories based on Natural Earth, which also includes places like Greenland, Puerto Rico or New Caledonia. The count is not a political statement.
Your countries in the app
In the Travel Wish Map app, every place becomes a pin on your world map, with your own photo if you like, marked as a wish or as visited. With a free account, your stats count the countries you have visited separately from the countries on your wish list, and your map stays with you on every device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a map of the countries I have visited?
Choose “Visited” or “Wish list” above the map and tap a country. Tap it again to remove the mark. You can add small countries with the search field below the map.
Is my map saved anywhere?
No. This page stores nothing and sets no cookies. Your selection only lives in the link in your address bar, which you can bookmark or share.
Why does the map show 242 countries and territories?
The map uses Natural Earth data, which includes territories such as Greenland or Puerto Rico besides independent states. The United Nations has 193 member states and 2 observer states, 195 in total.
How is the share of the world’s land calculated?
The map uses an equal-area projection. The share is the area of the countries you visited divided by the land area of all countries and territories on the map, Antarctica included. It is an approximation.
Can I download my map as an image?
Yes. “Save as image” downloads your map as a PNG file with the number of countries you have visited.
